I think when I started blogging here on cheekyboots, I did a lot of “processing out loud”.
Then somewhere along the line I decided “nobody wants to hear that…I should only write when I have really great thoughts that other people will benefit from”.
I am not sure, really, which is the better angle.
I know that some people don’t like messiness. They want the clean version.
I also know that I’ve never been a very “clean” person. I am pretty emotionally messy. I got feelings all over the place.
And I tend to appreciate that in other people – as long as they take responsibility for the mess. Dumping a mess on someone is no fun. But revealing a mess, while owning it, feels touching and real to me.
I guess I have this standard in my head of the “right way to reveal messiness”. That is, you’ve got to be completely clear first, and then talk about it, but from the perspective of having already figured out what it all means.
So that means, when I am feeling messy and unsure, I just don’t write. Hmmmm.
Well, I’m not really sure what to draw from this. I got no wise thoughts on the matter. I just am noticing that that kind of standard doesn’t really feel all that useful, and I wonder where it comes from.
I think blogging used to be more of open journalling – but now a lot of people use it as a format to publish more “finished” pieces – more like articles or essays. And there is a wide range of in-between styles.
And I suppose there is a wide range of opinions on which is better, like the infamous “blogging is oversharing” idea.
Eh. I just want to enjoy my blog again, and not feel like I’m catering to expectations living in my stooopid head.

I totally know what you mean. Sometimes I read blogs that are just one finished essay after another with well organized theses, great ideas… and I wish I could write these great analytical masterpieces for my blog too, instead of just blabbing on about things that nobody else really cares about unless you are a celebrity. So I think writing about more universal issues is the way to go, but that doesn’t have to be all you write about. Even from personal or “messy” writing you can infer a lot from it I guess. Sometimes you just want others to care about your life, but mostly it’s sharing what you believe is interesting or worthwhile with others..

Universal Cynic
I know what you mean. I think a blog is personal. It started as a means to comment on the web – a log of one’s web journey. It’s becoming something else nowadays, but that’s ok.
If I keep on writing, maybe I’ll produce a few gems along the way, I think. We write whatever we want… to express ourselves or maybe to share some knowledge. If someone like it, good for them. If not, who cares. People talk to walls to feel better… why not a blog?
Very nice layout here, btw. Love it!
